"Red Hot Readers"

For sixteen years, March has been a special month at Vilseck Elementary School. Everybody may have March Madness and Terra Nova, but only Vilseck has Red Hot Readers Month.

Red Hot Readers Month is thirty-one days of reading incentive activities whose goal is to encourage students to read more and enjoy it more. In addition, it is a great opportunity for families to show that they value reading and want to pass that commitment on to their children. In addition, Red Hot Readers Month has won the Linda S. Resch Reading Award from ECAPTS, the European PTSA, three times!

The month started off with the Kick Off Assembly. Highlights of the kick off assembly included songs, Red Hot Reader Cheerleaders, Vilseck High School's varsity cheerleaders, the Readers' Promise led by BSB Commander, LTC Joseph Moore, and the announcement of the Principal's Challenge by Dr. Robert Allen. His challenge to the students was that if they read 300,000 minutes during the month of March, he would ride around school on a scooter, while wearing a purple wig. The students really liked that challenge.

In the end, students did not read 300,000 minutes.they read 392,035 minutes! Dr. Allen really enjoyed zipping around the school the next day on his scooter. Whether he enjoyed the wig as much, we don't know! But we do know that the students enjoyed reading, competing, and participating in the many special events of the month. Hopefully, they will continue to read for fun and learning!

Will Dr. Allen win next year? If the past is the key to the future, he had better increase the minutes.
