Observing the Growth of Fungi
.
The students will spend 7 days growing and observing mold on a tomato, orange rind, and piece of bread that are sealed together in a bag. The sealed foods will be kept in dark places within the classroom. Each day, the students will observe and record the growth data.
On the 7th day, the students will analyze the data and make inferences about how mold gets energy. The students will discuss whether or not a food can spread its mold to another food; whether or not the foods grew different types of mold; and whether or not mold can grow without water or in a sunny spot.
